Frequently Asked Questions - Acupuncture
What can I expect during an acupuncture appointment?
During an initial appointment, we will discuss your chief complaint (i.e. reason for your visit), as well as a full health evaluation. Your tongue and pulse will then be evaluated, which helps to establish a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Follow up appointments will include a quick update on your condition, followed by treatment.
Treatments may include needles and/or other modalities depending on the condition being treated.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture should not be painful. The needles are very fine- so fine you can bend them! Some areas are more sensitive than others but for the most part, you should not feel them being inserted. If there is some discomfort, the needles can be adjusted or removed.
Most patients find acupuncture to be quite relaxing and may even fall asleep.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments will be discussed during your appointment and depends on the condition and how you progress from treatments.
Everyone is unique, which is why each treatment plan is individualized.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Try to have something light to eat about 1 hour before your appointment. But, try not to eat or drink anything that would colour the tongue about 1 to 2 hours before.
You may wear loose clothing to your appointment for easier access to different areas of the body. However, the table is set up with clean sheets if you need to be properly draped.
Can acupuncture help me?
Studies have shown that acupuncture can help with many conditions. Some of these include pain, stress and anxiety, headaches, digestive issues, women’s health and infertility.
